Type Explorations is an exploration of typography integrated with video. The original concept for Type Explorations was about a man overcoming his struggle with writer’s block. As the man wanders through the neighbourhood, inspiration from the city surroundings follow him home. At this point the video takes a new direction and ends abruptly, leaving the audience to interpret their own conclusion. The escalating and dramatic soundtrack insinuates a not-so-pleasant ending... During the video editing process a great deal of experimentation was explored. Paper Trails is a visual countdown sequence that experiments with positive and negative space through the integration of layers, blending techniques, masks, colour and opacity. Scraps of paper with diecut numbers were filmed floating through space and later integrated with the soft backdrop of a window view. The houses seen in the background create an additional layer of dimension and texture. The sunny hues used in the sequence are warm and playful. To add a twist of whim, I allowed snip-its of my hands to be seen pulling the paper and revealed the edges of the video’s frame. In the remade movie titles for The Science of Sleep, the camera pans dreamily across a horizontal, hand-made set while the titles float in and out of the shot. The typeface, being hand-drawn and heavily tracked, appears less confined and more free-flowing. Through a playful, dream-like ambiance, viewers quickly recognize the tone of the movie. Elements of human interaction are intentionally revealed during the title sequence. The strings supporting the clouds are shown as they move though the sky and stick handles appear as cars move along the road. Basic craft materials are used in the construction of the set, many of which are seen in the actual movie, including cardboard cars, cotton clouds and cellophane water.Emilie Simon’s To the Dancers on the Ice compliments the sequence, setting the pace and enhancing the dream-like state. An educational video based on the book The Official Sex Manual: A Modern Approach to the Art and Techniques of Coginus by Gerald Sussman. Written in the 60s, this book parodies the art and techniques of foreplay. A narrator takes you through these techniques while Sally and Jerry demonstrate them. Aesthetically, I tried to achieve the look of an old, out dated and low-budget educational movie. Animated text and pixelated imagery are also incorporated. Decorations included; outdoor and indoor signage, computer display tables and 3D light boxes. Raw materials were used to compliment Steam Whistle’s industrial space.
